Drug
abuse begins with a problem, discomfort or some form of emotional or physical pain for which the individual does not have an immediate answer. The person feels that his problem or pain is major, persistent, and without solution or relief.
For these reasons, some people, young or old, male or female, high income or low, begin to use potentially addictive drugs or alcohol in an attempt to relieve the pain or discomfort.
These drugs may even offer temporary relief.
At this point the individual will continue to use in an effort to find continuing relief.
Tolerance for the drug or alcohol sets in requiring larger and larger doses more and more often to obtain the same results. At this point the door has been opened to drug
abuse and it is only a short walk to full blown addiction.

drug use in a misguided attempt to escape the feeling of guilt.
In what seems an endless cycles this goes on and on with the
addiction and the cravings, guilt, and depression going in a downward spiral towards death or jail.
Alcohol
abuse can be considered to set in when the use of alcohol is impacting the individual’s quality of life.
This may be drinking on the job, arguments at home due to mild or severe intoxication, ignoring one’s responsibilities in favor of alcohol use, or any of the seemingly endless list of detrimental effects.
One does not necessarily reach the stages of full blown
alcoholism in order to benefit from alcohol
abuse treatment. Alcohol abuse most often occurs as a solution to the cravings, guilt, and depression.
These three points are key points leading up to and then continuing drug or alcohol abuse.
When one is able to feel better and find more joy without the alcohol than with it, the need, desire, or compulsion to abuse it fades away. Alcohol abuse
treatment in time can prevent the full blown miseries and possible death resulting from alcoholism.
